Study Overview

Intelligent Pumps Are Process Control Game Changer
Pumps have outgrown their traditional role as the mechanical workhorses of manufacturing with the addition of digital technology and have entered the process control domain.  Intelligent pumps are mechatronic devices, a synergistic combination of electronics, mechanics, and computing melded into an advanced hybrid system.

The case for intelligent pumps is a compelling one save energy, improve process control, and assess device and system health all in the same device.   Intelligent pumps can automatically adjust operation to match the head requirements of the system thus enabling the pump to operate more effectively and efficiently.

All manufacturers must solve the basic optimization problem of how to produce the most valuable product at the least possible price.  Regardless of the source, variability affects product quality, reduces equipment reliability and life, and causes excessive energy consumption.  Plants that are highly complex and require frequent changes and fine tuning of process parameters generally reap greater benefits from intelligent pumps which can automatically adjust to pump system and process changes to eliminate disturbances and reduce process variability.

Strategic Issues
The decision to implement an intelligent pump requires commitments from maintenance and engineering, instrumentation and electrical personnel, and plant operators.  How do suppliers overcome the culture challenges to achieve market growth?

  • Will high energy prices have a positive impact on market growth?
  • Are different strategies required for different industries?
  • Will new distribution channels be required?
  • How will government incentives affect market growth?
  • Which manufacturing strategies are the best fits for intelligent pumps?
